We all know that Britain is a ridiculously centralised state where a country of 65m plus people is largely beholden to decisions made by Westminster on areas from taxation to bin collection, from education to planning.  its a broken system but we plough on regardless telling local government they need to do better or tarring the whole sector with the same brush when one council messes up.  Local politicians are largely  an ageing demographic many of whom are getting fed up with the endless  round of cutting services whilst seeing other public bodies locally sail serenely on spending money they can't afford .  Westminster politicians and civil servants start from a 20th century worldview - they need to wake up to 21st century and think local and think real empowerment. Hopefully the Autumn Statement will bring some of this. Don't hold your breath.
