Much has been made of landlords seeking to profit from the housing shortage in the UK. A number of recent tax changes has certainly made it more expensive to be a private landlord.
Unfortunately, at a time of a shortage of housing, additional costs are often passed on to tenants. Indeed, making it less attractive for private landlords to invest into housing without someone else stepping into the breach exacerbates the problem.
It is about time that we align interests - providing incentives for landlords to provide good homes at acceptable rents & terms.
